Sony hosted a PlayStation event on september 17,2020 which finally revealed that the next-gen console PlayStation 5 will cost $499.99 for the Disc model, and $399.99 for the Digital Edition, the console will launch on November 12th.
Preorders have already begun on September 17th at select retailers in certain countries. This pricing puts Sony somewhat similar to Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, which the company is set to release its flagship Xbox Series X for $499 and its entry-level Xbox Series S at $299 on November 10th, just 2 days before the PS5 releases.
The US, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, will get the release date of November 12th, November 19th release is set for the rest of the world for the new console.
Sony did note that they still have to finalize a release date for China.
The PlayStation 4 cost $399 at launch, it currently now sells for $299, while the PlayStation 4 Pro originally sold for $399. It is still unclear if Sony is planning to drop prices or discontinue the older models once the PlayStation 5 is out later this year.
It’s also worth noting that the PlayStation 5 will include backward compatibility for an “overwhelming majority” of the existing PlayStation 4 lineup, although details are still slim.
That expanded library might help make it more attractive to potential PlayStation buyers over the older consoles this holiday season.
Sony also revealed new trailers and announcements for various games that will be releasing on the next-gen console.
Here is a list of every game announced or showcased during the event:-
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach
- Oddworld Soulstorm
- Death loop
- Demon’s Souls remake
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
