Facebook Data Breach. Did Facebook Betray?

facebook

A user posted the phone numbers and personal information of hundreds of millions of Facebook users on the Internet for free on April 3 in a low-level hacking forum.

The leaked data revealed includes personal information of over 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries, including over 32 million records of users in the US, 11 million of users in the UK and 6 million of users in India. This includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, dates of birth, biographies and in some cases email addresses.

The truth is that the data is not old. They may have been grabbed from Facebook some time ago, but most people won't have changed their names, phone numbers or locations since then.

For most people, the leaked data is current. It's still data that could be exploited.

So I can assume that Facebook is not sorry. It doesn't even say it will contact the half-billion users whose data leaked onto the Internet - not through the users' own fault, but through Facebook's incompetence and lack of care.

You might want to keep that in mind when deciding what to do about this case and the umpteen other occasions when Facebook has betrayed your trust in the past.
